Gutenberg 16.1: Pattern Creation, Library, and Distraction-Free Mode Added

Gutenberg 16.1: Introducing the Pattern Library and Distraction Free Mode

Gutenberg 16.1, the latest release of the popular WordPress block editor, has arrived with some exciting new features. This release introduces the Pattern Library, which allows users to create and manage their own patterns that will appear in the block inserter. Additionally, reusable blocks have been renamed to synced patterns. Another notable addition is the Distraction Free mode in the Site Editor, providing users with a clutter-free workspace. Let’s take a closer look at these new features and how they can enhance your WordPress editing experience.

Introducing the Pattern Library

The Pattern Library in Gutenberg 16.1 allows users to create and manage their own patterns. These patterns can be saved to the new Library and will also show up in the block inserter. This feature provides users with more flexibility and control over their content creation process. By creating custom patterns, users can easily reuse specific layouts or designs across their website, saving time and effort.

Renaming Reusable Blocks to Synced Patterns

In Gutenberg 16.1, reusable blocks have been renamed to synced patterns. This change reflects the enhanced functionality of these blocks. Synced patterns allow users to create blocks that can be used across multiple pages or posts and can be updated from a single location. This ensures consistency throughout your website and simplifies the editing process.

Distraction Free Mode in the Site Editor

One of the standout features of Gutenberg 16.1 is the new Distraction Free mode in the Site Editor. This mode removes all controls and menus, providing users with a clean and focused workspace. Similar to the Distraction Free mode added to the content editor in October 2022, this feature aims to create an environment conducive to distraction-free work.

Andrei Draganescu, an engineer sponsored by Automattic, submitted the PR for this feature and highlighted three reasons why the Site Editor could benefit from a Distraction Free mode. Firstly, it creates an ideal environment for focused work. Secondly, it eliminates unnecessary UI elements for power users who prefer a minimalistic interface. Lastly, it enables a 1:1 preview while maintaining full editability.

Automated Footnotes

Another notable addition in Gutenberg 16.1 is the automated footnotes feature. Users can now add footnotes to their content by simply highlighting the text and selecting “Footnote” from the formatting menu. This will automatically insert the note and create a Footnote block at the bottom of the content. Footnotes can be added within paragraph, heading, and list blocks, and are saved as post meta. It’s worth noting that the Footnote block is not accessible in the block inserter and is automatically created and inserted with the first footnote.

Additional Notable Features

Gutenberg 16.1 also includes several other noteworthy features. Live block theme previewing in the Site Editor has moved out of the experimental stage and is now available for block themes under Appearance > Themes. The Site Editor sidebar now displays template and settings configuration details for the home and index templates, providing users with more visibility and control over their website’s design. Lastly, aspect ratio controls have been added to the Image block, allowing users to easily adjust the proportions of their images.

Conclusion

Gutenberg 16.1 brings a range of exciting new features to the WordPress block editor. The Pattern Library empowers users to create and manage their own patterns, while the Distraction Free mode in the Site Editor provides a clutter-free workspace for focused work. The automated footnotes feature simplifies the process of adding footnotes to your content. Additionally, the release includes several other enhancements and bug fixes that contribute to an improved editing experience. If you’re eager to try out these features before August, make sure to use the Gutenberg plugin or test WordPress 6.3 Beta 2.
