Google is now testing AI overviews from SGE in the main Google search interface.

Google is always working to improve its search interface and provide users with the most relevant and accurate information. One of their latest endeavors is testing AI overviews in the main Google Search results, even for users who have not opted into the Google Search Generative Experience (SGE) labs feature.

Previously, in May 2023, Google introduced the Search Labs section where users could opt in to see and use the Google SGE results that included AI overviews. However, now Google is expanding this feature to a select group of users in the United States, regardless of whether they have specifically opted in or not.

So what exactly will users see? Google will display AI overviews to a small subset of US users. Initially, Google is focusing on queries where they believe generative AI can be particularly helpful. These queries are often more complex or involve questions where it is beneficial to gather information from various web pages. For example, a query like “how do I get marks off painted walls” may generate an AI overview to provide a comprehensive answer.

Google has expressed confidence in the quality and value of these queries. The aim is to offer AI overviews when they can truly enhance the user’s search experience and provide a better response than what is currently available on Search.

During the testing phase, Google will be experimenting with different variations of AI overviews. This means that not all users in the test will see the same results. The purpose of these experiments is to gather feedback from a wider audience who have not specifically opted into SGE. Google wants to understand how the general population finds this technology helpful and make necessary improvements based on user feedback.

One concern for website owners and advertisers is the impact these AI overviews may have on traffic. The introduction of AI answers may push down both organic search results and standard search ads. Depending on where citations are referenced from and where Google places ads, this could result in either less or potentially more traffic to websites. However, it is likely that these experiences will drive less overall traffic compared to the current Google Search results.

It remains to be seen when Google will fully launch this feature, but for now, users no longer need to be part of the SGE labs to see AI overviews. Google is testing it in the wild to gather valuable insights and optimize the user experience.
