Decreased Frequency and Visibility of Google AI Overviews on Reddit: Analyzing the Trends

Google’s AI Overviews feature has been receiving less visibility on Reddit recently, and new analysis from SEOClarity and SERanking sheds light on the trends surrounding this change. Both platforms analyzed a large number of keywords to gather their data.

According to SERanking, AI Overviews now appear in only 8.71% of searches, a significant decrease from the previous 64% when it was still known as Search Generative Experience. SEOClarity’s analysis shows a slightly higher percentage of 7.6%, down from 17.4% in May. These reductions are not surprising, considering the criticism Google faced for providing incorrect and misleading answers through AI-generated responses.

The change in visibility is also reflected in the citations within AI Overviews. SERanking found that Reddit is no longer among the top 10 most cited domains. The top five most referenced websites are runnersworld.com, healthline.com, linkedin.com, runrepeat.com, and en.wikipedia.org.

SERanking’s analysis also revealed some interesting findings about AI Overviews. They discovered that 84.72% of AI Overviews include at least one domain that appears in Google’s top 10 organic search results. Additionally, featured snippets and AI Overviews appear together 45.39% of the time, with citations matching 61.79% of the time. On average, AI Overviews contain 4,342 characters. Ads also frequently appear with AI Overviews, occurring 87% of the time. The most common industries for AI Overviews are Relationships, Food and Beverage, and Technology.

SEOClarity’s analysis focused on different aspects of AI Overviews. They found that AI Overviews appeared for 44% of Your Money Your Life (YMYL) keywords. Interestingly, local keywords do not trigger AI Overviews, which aligns with recent findings from BrightEdge. The most common industries for AI Overviews in SEOClarity’s analysis were Home Warranty, Technology, and Social Media.

Despite the initial issues with AI Overviews, Google continues to move forward with this feature. The company aims to become more of an answer engine rather than a search engine. As this shift progresses, some brands and businesses may need to adapt to a new reality with less organic traffic.

While the frequency and visibility of these overviews have decreased, Google’s continued focus on improving them suggests that they will play a significant role in the future of search.
