WooCommerce Rebrands to Woo

WooCommerce, the popular open-source commerce platform, is undergoing a rebranding effort and will now be known as “Woo.” This shorter and more playful name is already familiar to many loyal customers and reflects the company’s commitment to empowering success for merchants and developers. The rebranding extends to all aspects of the Woo experience, including the Woo Marketplace and WooExperts program.

Automattic, the parent company of WordPress, acquired WooCommerce in 2015 along with WooThemes. Since then, the platform has grown exponentially and now powers over 4.4 million live websites, including 33% of the top 1 million online stores. With such a significant market share, the decision to rebrand is a strategic move to further solidify Woo’s position in the e-commerce industry.

As part of the rebranding, WooCommerce.com will migrate to the woo.com domain. This change aims to streamline the naming system and create a cohesive brand identity. Woo VP of Creative and Communications, David Callaway, explains that “Woo” has been the preferred name among customers for years, and the rebranding aligns with their vision for the company.

The transition to Woo also involves renaming various products and services to support a simplified naming system. For example, WooCommerce Payments is now WooPayments, and other product names will gradually follow suit. This standardized approach aims to better connect Woo’s core software, extensions, and programs.

It’s important to note that while “Woo” refers to the brand and company, WooCommerce remains the open-source e-commerce platform for WordPress. This distinction ensures that customers understand the relationship between the two entities.

One of Woo’s recent product launches, Woo Express, already bears the shorter name. During the 2023 State of the Woo presentation at WooSesh, the team highlighted some significant milestones for Woo Express. This all-in-one Woo plan, hosted on WordPress.com’s infrastructure, was described as “Woo’s biggest bet ever.” Since its launch in 2023, Woo Express has gained over 1,000 customers, thanks to its new onboarding flow and store personalization experience. The platform features a setup guide and recommendation engine powered by an AI-driven assistant, enhancing the user experience for merchants.

Existing Woo customers need not worry about the name change. While they may see a note about it in their dashboard or emails, no action is required from store owners. The transition to Woo will not impact their operations or the functionality of their online stores.
