Open Source Survey 2024 Now Open

The Open Source Initiative (OSI) has announced the launch of its 2024 State of Open Source survey. As a non-profit organization that oversees the Open Source Definition (OSD), OSI plays a crucial role in the open source ecosystem. This is the third year that OSI has conducted the survey, and it is being done in collaboration with OpenLogic by Perforce, who has sponsored it in previous years. For the 2024 edition, the Eclipse Foundation will also be joining the initiative.

The survey is open to both users and contributors of open source software, although the questions are primarily focused on organizations that utilize and develop open source software. The main objective of the survey is to gather information on technology trends, the usage of open source software, challenges faced by organizations, growth areas, and more. The data collected will be used to create the 2024 State of Open Source Report, which will be made freely available on the OpenLogic website in early 2024.

According to Stefano Maffulli, the Executive Director of OSI, the data collected in this survey is crucial for tracking the evolution of open source licenses. This is especially important at a time when licenses are transitioning from OSI-approved to proprietary. By understanding these changes, OSI can better serve the open source community and ensure that the principles of open source software are upheld.

The survey will remain open until November 10 and can be completed in approximately 7-10 minutes. All responses will be anonymized to protect the privacy of participants. Furthermore, the data collected will be published under an open source license, allowing for transparency and accessibility.

Participating in this survey provides an opportunity for organizations to contribute to the understanding of the current state of open source software. By sharing their experiences and insights, they can help shape the future of open source development and usage. Additionally, the survey allows organizations to identify common challenges faced by others in the open source community, enabling them to learn from each other and find innovative solutions.

Open source software has become increasingly popular in recent years, with organizations of all sizes and industries adopting it for various purposes. The flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and collaborative nature of open source software make it an attractive choice for many. However, there are also unique challenges that organizations face when using and building open source software.

The State of Open Source survey aims to shed light on these challenges and provide valuable insights into the current trends and practices in the open source community. By understanding these challenges, organizations can better navigate the open source landscape and make informed decisions about their software development strategies.

In addition to providing insights into challenges, the survey also focuses on growth areas within the open source ecosystem. This information can help organizations identify emerging technologies and trends that may impact their future development plans. By staying informed about the latest advancements in open source software, organizations can remain competitive and ensure that they are leveraging the most innovative tools available.

Overall, the State of Open Source survey is an important initiative that allows organizations to contribute to the collective knowledge of the open source community. By participating in the survey, organizations can help shape the future of open source software and ensure that it continues to thrive. The data collected will provide valuable insights into technology trends, challenges, and growth areas, which will be shared with the community through the State of Open Source Report.

If you are involved in open source software as a user or contributor, take a few minutes to participate in the survey. Your input will help drive the future of open source software and contribute to a better understanding of its current state. Together, we can continue to foster innovation, collaboration, and accessibility in the open source community.
