Revised Data Shows Google’s Search Market Share Loss Was Not Significant

Google’s Search Market Share Loss Was Not Significant, Says Revised Data

In a surprising turn of events, revised data from Statcounter indicates that Google did not experience a significant loss in its search market share in April. Previous data suggested that Google’s market share had fallen to 77.52% in April, down from 86.94% in March and 88.88% year-over-year. However, the revised figures show that Google’s market share actually dropped to 86.58%, a much smaller decline.

While the revised data shows that Google’s drop in market share was not as dramatic as initially reported, it is still worth noting that the company has been consistently losing market share in the U.S. since August 2023. In May 2023, Google reached its highest market share in the past 12 months at 89.1%.

Globally, Google continues to dominate the search market with a 90.91% market share, according to the revised data. This is a slight decrease from 91.38% in March and 92.82% year-over-year. Google’s highest market share in the past year globally was 93.11% in May.

On the other hand, Microsoft Bing has seen slight growth in both the U.S. and global markets. In the U.S., Bing’s market share increased from 8.04% in March to 8.24% in April. Year-over-year, Bing’s market share grew from 6.43% to 8.24%. Globally, Bing’s market share increased from 2.76% to 3.64% year-over-year.

Yahoo also experienced marginal growth, with its market share increasing from 2.48% to 2.59% in the U.S., and from 1.11% to 1.13% globally year-over-year.

It is important to note that Statcounter is still reviewing its search data for April 2024, and the figures could still change within the next 40 days or so. The company is currently undergoing a period of quality assurance testing and revision. While Statcounter has acknowledged the issue, they have yet to provide a comment on what happened with its April data.

Overall, the revised data shows that Google’s search market share loss was not as significant as initially reported. However, it is clear that the company has been facing challenges in maintaining its dominance in the search market. With Bing and Yahoo making slight gains, it will be interesting to see how the search landscape evolves in the coming months.
